Nanita’s Recipes

2008

My Nanita was born in Mexico City.  She left the capital at one point, moving up to the border city of Mexicali, Baja California.  Nanita says her mom was a great cook and I’ve seen her sadly try to recall dishes she remembers from her youth.

Nanita is a fantastic cook.  She can throw the best taco together out of leftovers, or surprise you with things you never even knew existed.  Nanita can make dishes not found in the border town where we live, such as Guanzoncles, Habas Verdes, and Ropa Vieja.

Nanita doesn’t measure anything and she throws in a pinch of this, a pinch of that.  To obtain most of these recipes, I have to actually make the food with her, watching her every move and asking her to stop so I can measure things.  It’s time consuming, and it can never be the same as when she makes it, but at least we can preserve a few recipes that we remember from our youth.

Welcome

Her Mexican dishes are deliciously creative.  Let us always remember her food, comforting and good.
